1  Compare how people gain power, how long they lead, and how the power is divided in each system of government.  Analyze voting patterns and infer what those patterns may mean U2 LG1

2  In your ISN answer the following  In your opinion, what is the purpose of government?  What are different types of governments you know about?

3  Most governments fall into two types of governments – centralized and decentralized  Centralized governments are where all the power in controlled by either one person or a small group of people  Decentralized governments break up the power to help prevent one person from becoming too powerful

4  Get into groups of 3-4  Each group will get a definition  Copy the definition in your ISN  The definitions will be rotated, make sure you get definitions for all six.  Copy the comparative government chart in your ISN  As a group fill out the chart using the internet

5  Go to the following link http://www.americanpast.org/voting/statelevel.html http://www.americanpast.org/voting/statelevel.html  Answer the following questions in your ISN  What are the voting patterns of the U.S. since 1988?  What are specific regions that tend to vote the same?  Why do you think they vote in a similar fashion?  What potential problems could you foresee due to these differences?
