5 Countries in the Middle East

6 Introduction After WWI, the newly formed League of Nations gave Great Britain a mandate over Palestine. Palestine's location on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea seemed like a great prize to the British, but problems soon erupted. It became clear that both Arabs and Jews claimed the region as a homeland. Britain promised to establish a national homeland for the Jews. After WWII, Palestine would be renamed Israel and given to Jews as a homeland to provide shelter from atrocities such as the Nazi Holocaust in Europe. Inevitably, fighting broke out between the two groups, which still remains unresolved today…

7 Activity Read the handout, Israel’s Involvement in Wars.
Answer the questions that follow.

8 Reasons for Conflict (Analyzing Primary Sources)
Why does Fawaz Turki refer to the Israeli’s as colonizers? What might be the best way for the Palestinian’s to regain control of their land, according to Abraham Tamir?

9 Israel & Palestine: Connection to Today
Jews were “scattered” across the world (Diaspora and Holocaust). Britain had control of Palestine after WWI and wanted to give the Jews a homeland (Israel). The USA is allies with Israel. Islamic Extremists (fundamentalists) despise the USA for being allies with Israel. THE “ACTUAL” STORY IS A LOT MORE COMPLICATED THAN THIS!

10 Summary Draw a cartoon, write a paragraph, write a poem, etc… that conveys your thoughts about the stalled peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

11 Regents Prep - Topic List

12 Critical Thinking Questions:
How would your life be different if you lived in a place that suffered from weekly terrorist attacks? Why is there a long history of conflict in the Middle East? How would you solve the problems in the Middle East? Why do you think the Israeli’s continue to hold their ground in the Middle East rather than retreat?
