1 Let’s Throw Romeo and Juliet a Wedding By Reagan Cassanova

2 Two households… Unit Summary Both alike in dignity… After researching Elizabethan times, the Globe Theatre, and Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, students will work in collaborative groups to throw the wedding of the millennia. Why should the greatest romance of all time be denied their big day? Students will create a power point or movie maker presentation, which includes: Juliet’s wedding gown, Romeo’s attire, the guests’ attire, the guest list, the music, the games, and the menu. Students will also create a power point presentation to teach classmates unfamiliar vocabulary from the text.

4 From ancient grudge break to new mutiny… Who is responsible for Romeo and/or Juliet’s death? Why? Are gangs and their rivalries a problem throughout history? Give some examples and explain. (How far back in time can you go?) Why does Shakespeare include so many references to time and fate? What would happen if those references were removed from the story? How would the story change if it was told from the Nurse’s perspective? Mercuito’s? Your choice? Unit Questions

5 Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. The director of the movie Romeo and Juliet has some interesting symbolic choices such as religious images and water. Explain the irony of the religious symbols. Give examples of when water is used, and it’s symbolism in the story. Do you agree with the director’s choices for the movie Romeo and Juliet? Why or why not? Think about updates, omissions, setting changes, etc. Unit Questions

6 From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, At the end of the movie Romeo and Juliet, the director uses a camera angle that pans out from above the star-crossed lovers. Why is this symbolic? He also shows several images. What do the images represent? What literary device is being implemented? Do you agree with the director’s choices for the movie West Side Story? Why or why not? 7 A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life. What is irony? Give an example of situational, dramatic, and verbal irony from Romeo and Juliet. Give examples of the contrasts Shakespeare uses in Romeo and Juliet. Be sure to include written examples in the text as well as character examples. Define allusion, pun, aside, foreshadowing, oxymoron, paradox, soliloquy, and monologue. Content Questions

10 Gauging Student Needs Assessment Purpose : To gather information about what students already know and what they wonder about Shakespeare and Elizabethan times. Goals: I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions. HOT: I ask students to research Elizabethan culture: fashion, food, way of life, etc. I ask students to compare /contrast with the 21 st century world.
