Contents… Introduction… What is wiki… Using wiki… Where to wiki… Conclusion…

Introduction platform, containing multiple technologies, all of them open. The principle of openness forced all operation to use free & open-source software only. Having commercial alternatives out of question, Wiki had the challenging task to build efficient platform of freely available components.

Wikipedia’s primary aim is to provide a platform for building collaborative Mission is to develop and provide open content wiki-style to the world for freempendium of knowledge. Introduction

Intro cont… Short history English Wikipedia launched on January 15, 2001, on www.wikipedia.com Founded by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales The Wikimedia Foundation was founded on June 20, 2003

What is wiki ? Wiki is in Ward's original description. The simplest online database that could possibly work. OR a database of pages which visitors can edit live. Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.

Cont… Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself. shown in the next

Using a Wiki Keep all of your notes on the wiki! Don't make the wiki page too stressful to edit. If you have to write a title, or date, or your initials, or even keep things neat when you make a note--you might not do it. If you have an idea, you want to be able to click Edit, note it at the bottom, and close the window. In this spirit, keep a permanent link to the wiki in your browser toolbar. Use attachments. Use lots of attachments, uploading PDFs and images when you can, and keep lots of references and links on the wiki. Don't keep any supporting material on your computer.

If you need to move off of the wiki to finish what you're working on, that's good too: yes,a wiki is good for collaboration, but it's more important to have a shared memory than a shared workspace. If you need to work off of the wiki--in a Word doc with Track Changes on, or bouncing a text file around in email--do that. Use the wiki when it reduces your workload. You don't need to be strict among a tiny number of people. Wikis happen to be good for collaboration, yes, but what they're really really good for is being a space where it's really fast to write things down and find them again. Using a Wiki

How can teachers use wikis? Provide a space for free writing. Debate course topics. Share resources, such as websites, annotated bibliographies. Maintain a journal of work performed on group projects. Discuss curricular and instructional innovations

Send them to Wiki…. http/www.wikipedia.org http/www.wikipedia.org Introduce them to the rules for writing on wikis. Establish conventions to be established for co-authoring texts. Set up your own wiki, invite them to become a member and participate. How can students use wikis?

The obstacles you face? Conflicts with traditional assumptions about authorship and intellectual property. Students feel reluctant to contribute b/c they lack confidence in their writing. Uncomfortable with advantages and disadvantages of public writing. Use of visuals and design options are limited. Editing is not extremely easy.

Where to wiki… MediaWiki - host your own Is a free software wiki package originally written for wiki pedia its now used by several other projects of the non profile wiki media foundation and by others wikis Media wiki right way or use the navigation on the right side to explore the basic site contents you'll find the fundamental introduction translated in to other languages, but the reference is English language Twiki – host your own T refer to (team) Enterprise collaboration platform

Where to wiki cont.. PBWiki – get hosted Easy to use webpages, that multiple people can edit it. WikiSpaces – get hosted Let you creat simple web pages that groups, friends, and families JotSpot – get hosted Create and share documents

Conclusions What can wiki do for me A wiki makes it easy to swap ideas and information on projects--whether for a family vacation or a complex business enterprise. A wiki opens the door to experts and shy silent types alike, increasing creativity, expertise, and productivity all around. Wikis end the waste of ricocheting emails and communication breakdowns--wikis literally get everyone "on the same page."

We are experiencing a major shift in the IT industry Open collaboration provides new principles of engagement Open source and wikis are great tools for such engagement Companies can benefit internally from open collaboration Companies can grow their ecosystem using open collaboration Conclusions
