2 Background Information Born in Rocken, Saxony on October 15, 1844. Family had a long history in the church. Father died in 1849. Attended school at Schulpforta- an elite school of only 200 students.

3 Background Cont… Published The Birth of Tragedy in 1872 at the age of 27. Formed a close friendship with composer Richard Wagner. Suffered most of his life with headaches and myopia. Suffered a mental breakdown in 1889. Died on August 25, 1900.
