1 Big 6 Lesson Plan Monica Carl

2 Objectives and Background 1. The student will be able to actively research a chosen disease in a proficient manner. 2. The student will be able to put together and present a PowerPoint presentation.

3 Task Definition  Students will research a disease for Health class and be able to present a slide show on the topic.  Students must select a topic and have it approved by the teacher.  The teacher and students will also brainstorm and generate an outline and rubric for the assignment.

4 Information Seeking Strategies  Students brainstorm and decide that possible sources for information about diseases would be: textbooks, encyclopedias, and medical websites.

5 Location & Access  The media specialist helps some students access WebMD and the Mayo Clinic website.  Other students look in the encyclopedia for their topics.

6 Use of Information  A student takes notes from WebMD using his own words.  A student has the media specialist photocopy pages out of the encyclopedia for her.

7 Synthesis  Each student creates his/her own slide show and presents it.

8 Evaluation  The teacher discusses the assignment with the class. They talk about what they felt was the hardest part of the assignment.  The students complete a self-reflection about their assignment.

9 I-SAIL Standards  Standard 1: Accesses information efficiently and effectively to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.  Standard 2: Evaluates information critically and competently to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.  Standard 3: Uses information accurately, creatively, and ethically to share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.
