8 Lawyer Fees  Retainer – a down payment on total fee  Contingency – a percentage of winnings/settlement.  Typical fee is 1/3 of amount awarded  If you lose case, client pays nothing (just court fees)

9 Working with your lawyer  Trust is important between client and lawyer  Attorney needs to know everything  Law grant attorney-client privilege  What ever you tell attorney is private and confidential  Cannot be disclosed without client’s permission  You make the final decision  You can fire the attorney, with judges approval if case is already in court.

10 Standards of Conduct  Code of Professional Responsibility  Enforced by state bar association  If lawyer violates  disbarred (no license to practice), reprimanded, suspended  Clients can file a malpractice suit (serious errors that result in injury or loss)
