UNIPHORM - Project Goals 4 To produce web-based distance learning Service for OpenGIS Training for Professional Technical Personnel

Target 4 public administration (local governments, utilities etc.), 4 regional planning, decision makers, 4 GIS companies

UNIPHORM characteristics  a web based service for delivery of materials, student support and interaction, based on latest web technology  dissemination of best practice and a forum for students, academics, vendors  a continuous professional development programme  multi-lingual presentation and support  conformance with EU data standards  links to established EU projects

Competitive Analysis 4 Strengths  UNIGIS network - virtual university in distance education in GIS  GISIG - WELL GIS, BEST GIS  network of PHARE Study Centres 4 Weaknesses  differences between countries in use of GI  conflicts of interests between developers and providers

Course Description 4 ideas of Open Systems and interoperability 4 providing the ability to navigate the world of Geographic Information, to understand the complex information about Open GIS 4 the skills to use Open GIS software, specifically Geomedia and Sirius 7 which are provided with the course 4 background concepts and knowledge on the technical issues surrounding Open GIS, such as spatial referencing, metadata, standards and databases 4 case studies developed in H and RO around real data sets and real applications

Technology New technology is used 4 Microsoft PowerPoint 4 Mindman 4 HTML

Presentation in HTML 4 PowerPoint and Word are used to provide both lecture materials and class notes 4 The level consists of a slide or screen, typically with some text and a small number of bullet points, together with notes and the associated resources

Organization of learning materials

Resources 4 Resources are files accessible through hyperlinks from the branches of the mindmap, held locally or on the web.

Delivery 4 Course delivery will be by a number of mechanisms which will be complementary. 4 The main materials will be delivered by paper based modules which will include notes on each of the course topics and a number of literature resources. This will be supplemented by digital resources available on CD and over the WWW. 4 The course length is 8-18 weeks started with an introductory workshop, followed by an equivalent of 100-hour distance learning, finished by a 4-day training

Partnership in Hungary EDUCATION RESEARCH APPLICATION

Conclusions 4 The basic principles are communication, cooperation and coordination between teachers, trainers, industry and students. 4 Open distance education is more appropriate than traditional approaches. 4 Distance education is always a team effort to which the actors are to be trained. 4 The management should build many feedbacks into the couseware development project life-cycle. 4 The most important factors in course delivery are openness and flexibility. 4 There is an urgent need for credit transfer system.
