2 Development of the Model  Founded by MCIT for ISPs that have International B.W. (8 ISPs)  Started in Q2 2002 with router Cisco2610 and switch Cisco3524  2 ISPs (TEDATA, NOL) of 8 ISPs  3 rd ISP (EGYNET ) after 6 months  IPv4 BGP peering, Using 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interfaces  Max. exchanged local traffic was < 2Mbps (around 1 Mbps)  Total international B.W. was < 1 STM1

3 Developments  2004 Broadband (DSL) initiative  2008 Submarine cable cut  2011 Arab spring: 3G traffic routed to CAiX

4 Current Status Current Status Run by NTRA (router Cisco3602 and switch Cisco4000) 5 ISPs connected via Giga fiber port (TEDATA, Vodafone data, Etisalat Misr, NOOR and Link.net) 1 ISP connected via Fast Ethernet (Yalla) BGP peering for IPv4 and IPv6 PCH servers hosted (copy of 30+ ccTLDs) Max. exchanged local traffic < 2 Gbps Total international B.W. is 214 Gbps

5 NTRA Role.. Regulations: Interconnection mentioned in Class A & B ISP Licenses and ISP’s compromised on NO charges for traffic exchanged. Site Location and Neutrality: Ramses CO where all ISPs are already co-located and run by neutral organization (NTRA) Setting Policy: in consultation with members Access to IX : No restrictions on access to CAIX for any Licensee as per the policies published on website http://www.caix.net.eg/index.php/caix-policy

6 NTRA Role.. Peering Policies: Open peering with filtering based on AS# Fees & Support: It’s free of charge, 24/7 on-call support Communication Channels: It’s very important to build and keep strong relations with IX members by mailing- list and periodical f2f meetings
