In 1822 the family moved to London and Mr Dickens was sent to prison for 6 months for not paying his bills. At the age of 12 Charles had to work at a dirty old factory near the River Thames. His job was to put labels on pots used to clean fire places. He never forgot that horrible time and wrote about it some time later in his life.

When he was 15, Charles got a job in a lawyers office and detested it.In most of Charles’s books he makes the lawyers horrid people! Charles learned Shorthand and got a job writing about Parliament. He travelled around Stagecoach, writing for newspapers and he wrote stories about the people he met. His most famous story is Oliver Twist about a boy who is made to work for an undertaker. Almost half of the funerals in London were for children aged Under 10 years old!!!!!
