1 The TETRA Interoperability Certification Process 哈尔德 Harald Ludwig Chairman TETRA Technical Forum TETRA Experience 2006 China 8 Nov 2006, Beijing

Slide 2 Content of Presentation  TETRA Technical Forum  What is Interoperability  Benefits of Open Multi-Vendor Market  The Interoperability Process  What is IOP Tested and Certified  Status of IOP Specifications and Certification  Next Steps - The Way Forward

Slide 3 Structure of the TETRA MoU Association TETRA MoU Association Operator and Users Association (OUA) Technical Forum (TF) Security and Fraud Prevention Group (SFPG) Rail Forum

Slide 4 Technical Forum  Open to all MoU Members  5 Meetings per Year  Website and Mailing List  Task: Management and Monitoring of the TETRA Interoperability Process  Top Priorities for 2006/2007: –Implementat New Certificate Formats –Encourage other (non-European) manufacturers to join the Interoperability Process

Slide 5 What is Interoperability (IOP)  IOP ensures, that TETRA equipment from one manufacturer is working with TETRA equipment from another manufacturer, and vice versa.  IOP Testing gives the confidentiality, that purchased equipment is interoperable.  IOP ensures, that TETRA is an Open Standard.  IOP enables Multi-Vendor market for TETRA

Slide 6 Benefits of open multi-vendor market  User benefits –wide choice of compatible certified terminals –specialised products for special needs –continuous and fast product innovation –continuous and genuine competition, hence lower prices –less dependency - lower risk of market disturbances  Industry benefits –wider market, bigger volumes –more possibility to invest – faster product creation –longer lifetime of market TETRA MoU Association runs the IOP certification process to guarantee open multi-vendor market!

Slide 7 Common Standard How does the IOP Process work? IOP Specification Process IOP Certification Process Define Rules Practical Test for Implementation of Equipment

Slide 8 IOP Specification Process  A formal process managed by the TETRA Association Technical Forum –Users to define Requirements and Priorities –Manufacurers to provide technical expertise

Slide 9 Operator User Association (OUA) Technical Forum ResolutionMembers Enquiry Manufacturers TF Meeting Requirements TETRA IOP Test Plan TETRA IOP Profile (TIP) IOP Specification Process Know How Comments CommentsProposals V+D DMO ISI PEI Drafts Topics & Goals

Slide 10 TETRA IOP Profile (TIP) IOP Certification Process TETRA Products TEST SESSION Independent TETRA Certification Body TETRA IOP Test Plan Request for Testing Evaluation of Results TETRA IOP Certificate Duration approx. 4-5 month

Slide 11 Independent TETRA Certification Body  ISCOM is the official type approval body of Italy  Testing is performed at the infra- structure manufacturers premises supervised by ISCOM  Test execution is traced and the test logs are used by ISCOM to check the compliance to IOP specs.  After careful analysis of the logs the certificates are issued and published on the TETRA MoU web-site Photo by ISCOM

Slide 13 Interoperability Testing  Protocol Stack Testing –mainly Layer 3 signalling –some parts of Layer 2  Frequency Independent Testing –IOP Certificate is valid for all frequencies  IOP Testing does not cover: –Type Approval Testing –EMC Testing –Electrical Safety Testing –RF Conformance Testing

Slide 14 Status of IOP Documents (1)  Air Interface: 18 TIPs and 13 Test Plans  Direct Mode: 5 TIPs and 4 Test Plans  Inter-System Interface: 7 TIPs and 3 Test Plans  Peripheral Equipment Interface: 1 TIP (Draft)  Lists of Specifications available at: www.tetramou.com  Using TETRA  Interoperability www.tetramou.com  Specifications are property of the TETRA MoU Association and available free of charge to TETRA MoU Association members.

Slide 16 Status of IOP Testing and Certification (1)  12 Manufacturers participate in IOP Testing: –8 companies have received TETRA infrastructure certificates for 9 systems –9 companies have received TETRA terminal certificates in trunked mode –6 companies have received TETRA terminal DMO certificates –2 companies have received TETRA terminal DMO gateway certificates

Slide 17 Status of IOP Testing and Certification (2)  In total 176 IOP Certificates issued  Testing and Certification for Inter-System Interface (ISI) and Peripheral Equipment Interface (PEI) has not started yet  Certificates available for download: www.tetramou.com  Using TETRA  Interoperability www.tetramou.com

Slide 18 Interoperability in Practice  Almost all TETRA networks use a mix of terminals from different vendors  High innovation speed: –more than 30 new terminal models have been launched during the last 3 years. –terminals with GPS receivers and colour displays  An increasing number of application developers rely on the TIP specifications and the IOP process  Many Users and Operators ask for IOP Certificates when purchasing new equipment

Slide 19 The Way Forward  Continuing success of TETRA in Asia  Increasing number of manufacturers in Asia  from a European-Centric to a Global Activity  TETRA MoU would like to invite Asian companies to join the IOP testing process.  The first Technical Forum Meeting outside of Europe will be held in Asia in February 2007
