Two sides of pigmented mole do not match B  Border irregularity Borders of mole are not smooth C  Color Different colors in pigmented area D  Diameter Spot is larger than 6 mm in diameter © 2015 Pearson Education, Inc.

3 What is Skin Cancer? An abnormal cell mass
mitosis is no longer being controlled Two general classifications of cancer: Benign: doesn’t spread (encapsulated) Malignant: This means the cancer metastasizes (spreads) to other parts of the body Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer © 2015 Pearson Education, Inc.

4 Types of Skin Cancers: Basal Cell Squamos Cell Melanoma

5 Basal Cell Carcinoma Least malignant Most common type
Arises from stratum basale Typically on the face Edges tend to be pale in color © 2015 Pearson Education, Inc.

6 Figure 4.13a Photographs of skin cancers.
(a) Basal cell carcinoma

7 Squamos Cell Carcinoma
Rapid growth and can metastasize to lymph nodes if not removed Early removal allows a good chance of cure Arises from stratum spinosum Scaly, red, round elevated lesion Also found on head- scalp, ears, lips; hands © 2015 Pearson Education, Inc.

8 Figure 4.13b Photographs of skin cancers.
(b) Squamous cell carcinoma

9 Malignant Melanoma Cancer of the melanocytes (cells that produce melanin) Metastasizes rapidly to lymph and blood vessels This can result in death Detection uses ABCD rule ** there is such thing as a benign melanoma- this is just another name for a mole © 2015 Pearson Education, Inc.

12 Moh’s Surgery Cancer is removed (cut out) then frozen
Sliced into sections and stained for viewing Margins are checked to ensure the entire lesion is removed
