7. What is Batik? The wax-resist process or designing on fabric or paper. An Indonesian word meaning wax writing. The technique is at least 2,000 years old. It was used in such countries as China, Japan, Persia, and Egypt but reached its peak on the island of Java in Indonesia.

8. How is it done? When hot wax is applied to cloth or paper, it hardens then acts as a mask protecting that area from absorbing the dye or paint.
