1 Indoor Air Pollution By: Holly Kendall, Maddy Margulies, and Lindsay Zamites

2 Problem Things from around the house are causing pollution in the air inside of the house. The pollution can come from many different sources.

3 Where it occurs It occurs inside of buildings, homes, offices.

4 Sources of I.A.P. Cleaning Supplies Heating, Furnaces, Fireplaces, Chimneys Pesticides Radon - cancer causing natural radioactive gas that you can't see, smell, or taste Carbon Monoxide - colorless, odorless,tastless, highly toxic gas that can be trapped inside the house from cars being started in garages when the door is not open...fireplaces..etc. Smoke ( from cigarretes) Lead Paint

5 Immediate Effects irritation of eyes, throat, nose, dizziness, fatigue, headaches Asthma humidifier fever hypersensitivity pneumonitis factors for having reactions –age –medical conditions before –individual sensitivity

6 Long-Term Effects some effects show up years after exposure, or after exposure is repeated many times –respiratory diseases –heart diseases –cancer

7 How Technology Influenced the Problem Common household appliences such as stoves and heaters let gases into homes/buildings If gases are not released from these places, can cause problems

8 Do the Negatives Way out the Positives? Negatives of I.A.P. –Releases harmful gases and substances –Causes immediate and long term heath affects Diseases Positives of I.A.P. –Moves technology forward –Creates jobs/ new appliences that help stop the problem

9 PA Government Policies The Pennsylvania Legislature passed a law preventing smoking in many public places in June. It was in effect immediately. Ed Rendell signed it 90 days later.

10 Ways to Fix Problem Get better and clean ventilation in your house. Remove your exposure to the pollution. Open windows on nice days. Carbon Monoxide detectors.
