Merriam-Webster -Underlying foundation or basic framework -Permanent installations required for military purposes -System of public works of a country, state, or region; also: resources required for an activity Oxford Dictionary of English -Basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for operation of a society or enterprise

Cyberinfrastructure: an infrastructure for knowledge

“Cyberinfrastructure” is a term often used in two rather different contexts. For one group of cyber security practitioners, “cyberinfrastructure” is a term dating approximately from PDD (Presidential Decision Directive), Critical Infrastructure Protection, signed by President Bill Clinton on May 22, 1998: “Critical infrastructures are those physical and cyber-based systems essential to the minimum operations of the economy and government.” http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/pdd/pdd-63.htm http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/pdd/pdd-63.htm

For the rest of us, “cyberinfrastructure” is a term more commonly associated with the NSF (National Science Foundation) and its Office of Cyberinfrastructure, and with documents such as Revolutionizing Science and Engineering Through Cyberinfrastructure, “Atkins’s Report.”

cyberinfrastructure refers to infrastructure based upon: Distributed computer, Information technology, Communication technology. For example: If infrastructure is required for an industrial economy, then we could say that cyberinfrastructure is required for a knowledge economy.” http://www.nsf.gov/od/oci/reports/atkins.pdfhttp://www.nsf.gov/od/oci/reports/atkins.pdf at page 5

Cyberinfrastructure also encompasses large scale data storage; visualization; middleware, operating system and application software; collaboration tools; and yes, even networks. :-)

Cyberinfrastructure consists of computational systems, data and information management, advanced instruments, visualization environments, and people, all linked together by software and advanced networks to improve scholarly productivity and enable knowledge breakthroughs and discoveries not otherwise possible.

-Agriculture: How often to apply fungicide to minimize potato blight? -Meteorology: What are the ideal times to apply fungicide? Cyberinfrastructure bridges the gap between sophisticated data products and information from one domain (meteorology) and application in another (agriculture)
