Theme of the Week Science

Word of the Day Monday: Method Tuesday: Reaction Wednesday: Scientific Thursday: Scientist Friday: Test Tube

Quote of the day Monday Science is Organised Knowledge Tuesday Science has proof without any uncertainty Wednesday When radium was discovered, no one knew it would prove useful in hospitals Thursday The important thing in science is not to obtain new fact as to discover new ways of thinking. Friday We have guided missiles and miss-guided man

Science What has science done for us lately? Let’s look…

3D Printers Additive manufacturing—the industrial version of 3-D printing— is already used to make items such as medical implants, and to produce plastic prototypes for engineers and designers. Now it is possible to mass produce a critical metal-alloy part to be used in thousands of jet engines. 3-D printing for making s mal one- off items has received a great deal of publicity, it is in manufacturing where the technology could have its greatest impact

Smart Watches Eric Migicovsky didn’t really want a “wearable computer.” When he first conceived of what would become the smart watch five years ago. He just wanted a way to use his smartphone without crashing his bicycle. “I thought of creating a watch that could grab information from my phone,” “I ended up building a prototype in my bedroom.”

Ultra Efficient Solar Panels Solar Panels currently installed in homes, schools etc. only convert about 20% of the light energy that reaches them Harry Atwater and his team of scientist have designed panels that are more than 50% efficient. “In 5 years time when our product is on the market- no one will want panels that are only 20% efficient”

Brain Control Brain-computer interfaces: It is already possible to type just by monitoring the electrical activity of your brain, but as the technology advances, it could be possible for people with to operate wheelchairs or prosthetic limbs using only their thoughts.

Reflection These are just a few examples of technologies that have or will have an impact on your lives. All because of Science. “The important thing in science is not to obtain new fact as to discover new ways of thinking.”
