Changes to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2. Now and What’s Coming! Michael Corbat April 4, 2014

Agenda 1.Current Approved Changes – Relative Humidity – MERV Table – Particle Counter – Shedding Calculation 2.Upcoming Research 3.Proposed Changes – Mandatory Use of Appendix J – Elimination of Intermediate Dust Loadings – IPA Vapor Discharge – Change Reporting Values 2

 Previous Range 20-65% RH  ASHRAE RP-1287 Showed Major E2 and E3 Variations  New Range 45% ± 10  Measured at filter under flow  Fully Incorporated into Standard Relative Humidity 3

MERV Table Changes & Clarifications 4 MERVE1E2E3 8n/a 20 ≤ E 2 70 ≤ E 3 9n/a 35 ≤ E 2 75 ≤ E 3 10n/a50 ≤ E 2 80 ≤ E 3 11 20 ≤ E 1 65 ≤ E 2 85 ≤ E 3 12 35 ≤ E 1 80 ≤ E 2 90 ≤ E 3 13 50 ≤ E 1 85 ≤ E 2 90 ≤ E 3 1475 ≤ E 1 90 ≤ E 2 95 ≤ E 3 1585 ≤ E 1 90 ≤ E 2 95 ≤ E 3 1695 ≤ E 1 95 ≤ E 2 95 ≤ E 3

 Resolution would require the use of Optical Particle Counter  Goal: Reduce variation  3 Open Public Review Comments to Address  No major implication to test results Particle Counter Change 5

 Standardizes time for measuring shedding – 20 min  Downstream shall be no more than 5% greater than upstream  Will not affect most tests  One committee member opposed  Public Review Closed Shedding Calculation 6

 ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 has created a formal research committee  Keith Chesson, Clarcor Air Filtration is Chair  First SPC to be have its own Research Committee  Separate work for 52.2 specific from general TC 2.4 work Research 7

 Primary Project  Independent Round Robin  Repeat of ASHRAE RP-1088  Will follow inclusion of all changes  Goal to determine ruggedness of test method Research Project 8

 Second Project  Independent round robin of Appendix J  Compare with IPA Vapor standard being developed by ISO  Goal – to determine repeatability and reproducibility for both methods  Awaiting completion of the formal IPA Vapor method Research Project 9

 Appendix J was proposed to become mandatory  Has been tabled until June meeting  Would directly replace current conditioning step  Motion was amended to remove intermediate dust loadings Possible Upcoming Changes – Appendix J 10

 Continued pursuit of IPA Vapor Discharge  Would use protocol being developed at ISO  Reported value would be determined based on average of initial and discharge – Early data has shown this to represent Appendix J conditioning  Benefits – Speed – Cost – Repeatabily Possible Upcoming Changes – IPA Vapor 11

 Elimination of MERV  Reduction of number of MERVs  More relatable to EPA PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 – E1, E2 and E3 line up very closely  Discussions on how to approach – New classification system – Simply percent at each (e.g. PM1-90%) Possible Upcoming Changes – Reporting Value 12

 Research has shown ASHRAE dust no longer reflects “real life”  ASHRAE dust does not support depth loading products  ASHRAE test dust can fall off during testing  Working with GPC-35 to determine dust for energy classification  Complicated by MERVs 1-4 Possible Upcoming Changes – Loading Dust 13

 Filters tested as system – Prefilter/Final Filter  Nano Particulate Testing  Filter Shedding  ISO 16890 will likely be released mid-2015 Possible Upcoming Changes - Other 14
