GRADE 8 CURRICULUM SUMMARY

NUMBER AND OPERATION SENSE use manipulatives and diagrams to understand the concept of square root recognize perfect squares between 1 and 144 and apply patterns related to them determine the square root of numbers using an appropriate method demonstrate, through the use of models, an understanding of the Pythagorean relationship and apply it to solve problems use manipulatives and diagrams to develop the understanding of how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and be able to apply these operations in problem solving use estimation and mental mathematics on fraction operations where appropriate explore and represent percentages greater than 100% and less than 1% determine how to set up proportions and use the most appropriate method to solve problems involving rate, ratios, and percentage estimate and calculate percentage problems solve problems that involve percentage increase and percentage decrease understand the meaning of negative exponents for base 10 write very large and very small numbers in scientific notation compare and order decimals, integers, and fractions add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative decimal numbers and be able to apply these operations in problem solving

ALGEBRA AND PATTERNS use manipulatives and diagrams to model how to add and subtract algebraic expressions and how to multiply an algebraic expression by a number add and subtract algebraic expressions and multiply an algebraic expression by a number solve and check simple algebraic equations represent patterns in tables, graphs, words, and equations to help predict unknown values construct tables and graphs to show how related quantities affect each other recognize the connection between the slope of a line and its placement in the corresponding equation solve problems involving the intersection of two lines on a graph interpret graphs that are linear and non-linear

GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT determine the minimum sufficient conditions that will build a unique triangle determine the minimum sufficient conditions necessary to establish that two triangles are exactly the same size and shape (congruent) explore the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations determine and apply the properties of dilatations determine if two figures are similar and use this concept to solve problems classify and explore the properties of cones, cylinders, prisms, and pyramids make and interpret two-dimensional drawings of three-dimensional shapes understand the relationship between the area and perimeter of quadrilaterals and the area and circumference of circles estimate and calculate the area of a circle and composite two-dimensional figures estimate and calculate the volumes and surface areas of prisms and cylinders measure and calculate the volumes and surface areas of composite three- dimensional figures

DATA MANAGEMENT AND PROBABILITY use data to explore the idea of repeated samples of the same population investigate the concept of randomness compare experimental and theoretical probabilities for various events determine “averages”—mean, median, and mode—and how changes in data can affect each construct and interpret appropriate data displays
