2 Opening: Warm Up 0 Analyze the photo. How would you explain this photo? What could it possibly mean to the viewer? Be detailed and creative in your explanation. Respond in your reading journal. Your response should be 5-7 sentences.

5 Essential Question: How do people know when they’ve made the “right” choice? Standards: 0 ELACC7RL7.1- Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. 0 ELACCRI7.3- Analyze the interactions between individuals, events, and ideas in a text (e.g., how ideas influence individuals or events, or how individuals influence ideas or events). 0 ELACCW2- Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. 0 Today I will identify examples of people making choices that impact those around them because it will help me think deeply about what the right choice “looks” like.

6 Opening: Activator 0 What Would You Do?! 0 During the video, jot down your thinking about everything you see. 0 Think about the choices that the people in the video make. 0 Video Clip!!! Video Clip!!!

7 Work Period: Guided Practice Directions: Copy the questions for the article, “Baby Trapped in a Hot Car” 1. Why might a mother or father leave their child in the car? 2. Is it ever acceptable to leave a baby in the car? 3. What problems could occur if a mother or father chose to leave their baby in the car?

8 Responding to Literature After reading the article, “Baby Trapped in a Hot Car”, I feel that a baby should/should not be left in the car alone. (state your reason why-see question #2) I understand that a mother or father may leave their child in the car because (state reason #1). However, the problems with leaving a baby in the car include (state question #3). 0 Be sure to add at least two pieces of text evidence (ELACC7RL7.1) 0 Example: The article states that “10 minutes is all it takes”

(left side of front page)  How did the choice of having a “green” building effect the students and community highlighted in this article? 2. Using your thinking notes, read the article and answer the margin questions. 3. Answer the purpose for reading on the back of your article.  How did the choice of having a “green” building effect the students and community highlighted in this article? 4. Create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting what you know about Case Middle School to Griffin Middle School.  This is to be completed in your ELA notebook (Unit 2, Lesson 2 entry) 5. If you finish early, you may work on Skills Tutor Lesson #2

Think deeply and provide reasoning (at least one piece of text evidence) in your reflection.  Write a minimum of seven sentences  Include one piece of text evidence  Must be written in blue or black ink on loose leaf paper

13 Closing: Speech If you had the choice, what would you change about our schools’ physical attributes (characteristics/features)? How would you know that it was the “right” decision? Write a two minute speech persuading our school board to make your recommended changes to Griffin Middle School.  Include three pieces of text evidence.  Must be written in blue or black ink.  Yes, you will present your speeches to the class on tomorrow.  Practice, practice, practice to ensure your speech is engaging.
