What is a Sea? The word “sea” is used to describe the totality of interconnected bodies of water also known as the World Ocean. The word “sea” is also used to describe much smaller or specific bodies of water.

How many? There are exactly 7 seas in the entire world. The Mediterranean The Caspian The Adriatic The Red Sea The Black Sea The Persian Gulf The Indian Ocean

The Mediterranean Sea The Mediterranean is connected to the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by the Mediterranean region and almost completely enclosed by land. Mediterranean is derived from a Greek word meaning “inland”.

The Caspian Sea The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full- fledged sea. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) The Caspian Depression (The sea’s northern part) is one of the lowest points on earth.

The Adriatic Sea The Adriatic Sea is a body of water separating the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan peninsula and the Apennine Mountains from the Dinaric Alps and adjacent ranges. The Adriatic Sea sits on the Apulian or Adriatic Microplate, which separated from the African Plate in the Mesozoic era.

The Red Sea The Red Sea is also known as the Erythraean Sea It is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia.

The Black Sea The Black Sea is bounded by Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus, and drains through the Mediterranean into the Atlantic Ocean, via the Aegean Seas and various straits. The Black Sea outflow is cooler and less saline, and floats over the warm, more saline Mediterranean inflow leading to a significant anoxic layer well below the surface waters.

The Persian Gulf The Persian Gulf is a mediterranean sea which is located in Western Asia between Iran to the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula to the southwest. The Persian Gulf is an extension of the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman) through the Strait of Hormuz. The Gulf was a battlefield of the 1980–1988 Iran-Iraq War, in which each side attacked the other's oil tankers.

The Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean is the third largest of the world's oceanic divisions, covering approximately 20% of the water on the Earth's surface. The ocean's currents are mainly controlled by the monsoon.
