4 4 This sample is placed at the lower end of the Achievement grade range. Ideas have been generated within the brief of producing an identity for a Summer Daze festival, including projects for a logo, ticket and poster. Ideas for logo have been generated from a limited range of source imagery/ hand drawings. Ticket concepts and developments demonstrate a heavy reliance on existing design solutions. Developments for the poster at top of panel two, show an increased awareness of the appropriate relationship between text and image. However the final solution loses the connection to the wine and entertainment festival idea. With further investigation into source imagery and references to contemporary design models, this candidate may have arrived at a more appropriate solution. Final ticket solutions could have been enhanced by a consideration of hierarchy of final work. In order to reach a solid Achievement grade, this candidate would have needed to generate ideas from a wider range of appropriate established practice. This submission presents sufficient evidence to fulfil the expectations of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7.

8 8 This sample is placed at the higher end of the Achievement grade range. Ideas have been generated within the brief of designing promotional material for, old school cars, with projects including designing a logo, book cover and poster. The initial ideas investigated a range of viewpoints derived from the photographic investigation of cars. Ideas for logo have been generated and developed from original photographic material with a focus on detail. Although the ideas are worthwhile and a systematic approach has been employed, further evidence of the candidates decision making process through editing, could have resulted in a more compact and efficient arrival to the book cover design and the final logo. This brevity has prevented this submission Achieving with Merit. Although there is an appropriate control of processes, procedures, materials and techniques, this candidate would have benefited from demonstrating a greater understanding of typographical conventions, especially on panel two in the book cover design. Further references to established design practice would have also enhanced this submission. This submission presents sufficient evidence to fulfil the expectations of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7.

13 13 This sample is placed at the lower end of the Merit grade range. Ideas have been generated within the brief of producing promotional material for an alternative, acoustic, indie band and an up- coming concert, including four projects for a logo, ticket, CD and a poster. Ideas have been generated and developed on panel one, with two projects investigating the logo and ticket design. Project three has extended ideas into a CD cover. These ideas could have been extended more effectively by using 3D constructions of the packages and taking photographs of the front/back and inside covers of possible final solution. The final solution is elegant and interesting, although greater attention to the hierarchy of display would have enhanced the effect. The candidate has failed to recognise Explanatory Note 3 of the standard - Final solutions to given projects should be larger, generally following on from the developmental; too much space having been allocated to the photographic research and too little space/ scale allocated to the final solution. This submission presents sufficient evidence to fulfil the expectations of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7.

17 17 This sample is placed comfortably within the Merit grade range. Ideas have been generated within the brief of investigating a commemorative exhibition at the Auckland Museum – Our Martyrs, with projects including the design of a postcard, stamps and a billboard. The initial ideas have been derived from a limited selection of unacknowledged appropriate imagery. Further investigation into the image source may have enabled this candidate to generate more alternatives within each brief. The first panel clearly supports the reading of a systematic approach to the generation and development of ideas through the careful consideration of the sizing of smaller concepts feeding into minor final solutions. Although the candidate has presented a range of concepts for the second brief, showing an understanding of the constraints of stamp design, e.g. format and scale, would have enhanced this submission. The final billboard makes links to earlier ideas on panel one, yet seems isolated from the previous body of work which holds this submission in the Merit range. Further investigation into a range and depth of ideas would have enabled the candidate to arrive at more inventive solution and move towards an Excellence grade. This submission presents sufficient evidence to fulfil the expectations of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7.

22 22 This sample is placed at the lower end of the Excellence grade range. Ideas have been generated within the brief of producing a pop-up book for influential women throughout history, including three options for a double page spread on Coco Chanel using a minimal colour palette. This submission displays an innovative approach in the investigation of ideas, with a refreshing inclusion of models drawn from historical referencing. From the outset, the parameters are understood by the candidate, who clearly demonstrates facility in handling processes, procedures, materials and techniques within ‘scrapbook’ layout and ‘pop up’ models. Cut and paste is used before working on the computer which allows the candidate to explore all compositional possibilities. The compositional devices explored are sympathetic to the pop up idea. The use of 3D maquettes/models have been used to extend a depth of ideas, which are then clarified within the three double page spreads, showing a range of potential solutions, which moves this submission into the Excellence range. Sizing and layout has aided the reading of the portfolio, with intelligent decision making shown in the relative sizing and scale of final solutions. Evidence of a clearer understanding of established practice within Art Deco would have set this submission more comfortably within an Excellence grade. This submission presents sufficient evidence to fulfil the expectations of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7.

26 26 This sample is placed at the lower end of the Excellence grade range. Ideas have been generated within the brief of producing promotional material for Crave, a sweet boutique aimed at an older audience. Projects include a ticket, poster, goodies bag, and billboard. Concepts and developments draw upon source imagery, with each project using them in a variety of new ways, showing a range of potential solutions. The ability to re-generate imagery into new options with technical facility and genuine creativity is demonstrated in the 3D poster. Generally, this portfolio displays a sense of humour and is highly suitable for the given brief and market, pushing this submission into the Excellence grade range. However, the use of the bag doesn’t bear comfortably with the other solutions, which holds this submission at the lower end. The clarity in the decision making and readability of the portfolio would have been enhanced with each brief being more clearly differentiated from one another. Sequencing of smaller to larger works would have better shown a hierarchy of ideas, and the scale of the photograph of the billboard in the real world context, should have also been further considered. This submission presents sufficient evidence to fulfil the expectations of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7.
