1 Bell Ringer SC.7.P.11.2: Investigate and describe the transformation of energy from one form to another. Which of the following is one of the energy conversions taking place in a campfire? Heat to light Heat to kinetic Chemical to light Light to chemical All of the devices below either use or produce electrical energy. Which one converts mechanical energy to electrical energy? Battery Electrical drill Wind turbine Electric guitar

2 Bell Ringer SC.7.P.11.4: Observe and describe that heat flows in predictable ways, moving from warmer objects to cooler ones until they reach the same temperature. 3. Anna pours herself some room-temperature soda from a bottle and adds four ice cubes. In a few minutes the ice cubes are smaller and the soda is much colder. Which of the following best explains the change in temperature of the soda? Heat flowed from the soda to the ice cube and caused it to partially melt. Coldness flowed from the ice cube to the soda, making the soda colder. The cold water from the melting ice went into the soda, replacing the warmer water that was in the soda. The water from the melting ice makes the soda more dilute, and the lower concentration makes the temperature lower. 4. Jeffery brings a book from air-conditioned apartment to a balcony on a hot summer day. How will the cool book interact with the outside air? Heat from the book will move to the air. Heart from the air will move to the book. Coolness from the book will move to the air. Coolness from the air will move to the book.

3 What is Energy? Energy: the ability to do work OR to make change
All states of matter contain energy.

4 Energy Comes in Several Forms
You must know all these forms of energy: Potential Kinetic Thermal Chemical Electromagnetic/ Radiation Mechanical

5 Let’s see how energy is transferred from one form to another.
Thermal energy (HEAT): Transfers in 3 ways Example: candle, stove Forms of Energy Potential energy: stored energy Kinetic energy: energy of motion Electrical: energy from electricity Example: your TV gets energy from the electricity coming from the outlet Let’s see how energy is transferred from one form to another.

6 Forms of Energy Sound Energy: energy that vibrates through solids, liquids or gases. Example: the telephone ringing sends vibrations through the air from the phone to your inner ear Electromagnetic/ Radiation: energy that is transmitted in waves through space Includes the visible light spectrum Space is a major source of this energy Example: light bulb

7 Forms of Energy Chemical: energy released from chemical reactions
Example: Gasoline, batteries, digesting food

8 Forms of Energy Mechanical: energy from movement Example: moving your muscles to run is mechanical energy, a fan What Energy transformations are needed to allow you to run?

9 Energy Transformations and Conservation
Many objects in this restaurant have more than one form of energy. Find three objects that have more than one form of energy.

10 Potential Energy In mechanical energy, potential energy grows as you get higher

11 What do you think? Which color arrow has more potential energy?

12 Law of Conservation of Energy
In any process, energy is never created or destroyed. It merely changes forms.

13 Heat Transfer: Whenever the temperature of an object or substance changes, heat is being transferred. It travels only in one direction (Hot to Cold) and by three different methods. Heat is transferred from warmer areas to cooler areas by conduction, convection, and radiation. Crust forming on the surface of lava is an example of a change of state by transferring heat from the hot lava to the cooler air surrounding the lava.

14 Methods of Heat Transfer
Think-Pair-Share!! Discuss examples of each typeof heat transfer with a partner for 90 seconds!

15 Methods of Heat Transfer
Convection: Heat transferred by the motion of a substance Conduction: Heat transferred by touching Radiation: Heat transferred through as waves through space

16 Left Side: Right Side: Where Does Heat Transfer on
This Beach? List 4 places! Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. All states of matter contain energy. Potential energy results from the position or shape of an object. A second form of energy, kinetic energy, is the energy that results from the motion of an object. Together potential energy and kinetic energy make up mechanical energy. Forms of energy related to the particles of objects include thermal energy, electrical energy, electromagnetic energy, and chemical energy. Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy and potential energy of the particles in an object. The energy of electrical charges is called electrical energy. Electromagnetic energy travels through space in waves created by vibrating electrical charges. Chemical energy is potential energy stored in chemical bonds, which hold atoms to each other. All forms of energy can be transformed into other forms of energy. A change from one form of energy to another is called an energy transformation. Some energy changes involve one transformation. Others involve many transformations. In a system, as energy is transformed it is neither lost nor created. Rather, energy is conserved. The scientific principle that energy is neither lost nor created during a transformation is called the law of conservation of energy. The total amount of energy is the same before and after any transformation. Whenever the temperature of an object or substance changes, heat is being transferred. It travels only in one direction and by three different methods. Heat is transferred from warmer areas to cooler areas by conduction, convection, and radiation. 1. List 2 examples of energy transfer where energy changes forms 4 times. 2. Explain the Law of Conservation of Energy with two examples from the picture. 3. List three ways heat is being transferred in this classroom.
