3 When does campaigning start and why? Campaigns begin early to raise money in preparation for campaign activities. Presidential campaigns begin raising money almost 2 years in advance of the general election. House and Senate campaigns begin raising money almost immediately following their election.

4 How do candidates campaign? Candidates campaign based upon how voters vote. 1. Media Advertisements 2. Campaign Visits 3. Get out the vote drives (GOTV) 4. Phone calls and Text Messages 5. Emails and Regular Mail 6. Materials (signs, buttons, bumper stickers, t-shirts)

6 Candidates campaign based upon how voters vote. 1. Cues (Incumbency, Partisanship, Friends/Family) 2. Retrospective Voting – vote for the candidate/party that have done the best job in the past 3. Prospective Voting – vote for the candidate/party that you believe will do the best job in the future 4. Sociotropic voting – vote for the candidate/party that you believe will best help out your community
