2 cross-discipline integration will serve to…  create and cultivate interconnections  stimulate global awareness  help students make links between disciplines which helps to construct and connect their own learning  achieve high academic standards  explore ways that students might realize the diversity of the population and environment  help students acquire and integrate new knowledge

3 They compared National Standards in Art and World Language … then modified class schedules by blocking the time into one longer class period …enlisted the help of Board of Ed., administrators and community…

4 BENEFITS STUDENTS AND TEACHERS BY…  reducing interruptions  reducing level of stress for students and teachers  longer time frame to apply knowledge  longer time to demonstrate and develop skills and behaviors  teachers could nurture relationships with students  more time for group activities, processing and reflection

5 La Frontera I 1993-1994 La Frontera II 1994-1995 Spanish II & Graphic Design from 2 teachers to 4 over the next 3 years enrollments stabalized

6  larger proportions of student continued to upper level Spanish and upper level Art compared to the traditional classes  higher achievement in Art, Spanish, Public Speaking classes, school wide art shows  students observed positive collaboration between adult teachers  no D’s or F’s RESULTS

7 IN ANOTHER RELATED RESEARCH ARTICLE Effective Strategies for Mastering Spanish in Grades 9-12 Julieta Goode 2007  cooperative learning groups was the most effective way to increase success  the finished product of the group was of higher quality than individual projects

8  students were able to practice daily  students encouraged each other to strive harder
