1 Components of Health Objectives 1.Identify examples of each category (physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual) of health. 2.Identify 5 of the 7 lifestyle factors you can control to keep yourself healthy. 3.Define holistic, wellness & prevention 4.Identify 2 aspects of health you have little or no control over.

2 Components of Health

3 Physical  Physical characteristics and the way your body functions –Strength –Metabolism –Body composition (% of body fat vs. lean tissue) –Disease, illness –Sleep –Diet –Exercise –Avoid drugs & alcohol

4 Mental  The ability to recognize reality & BEING REALISTIC –Open to learn new things –Stress –Self-esteem –Ability to adapt to change –Having a + or - outlook (optimist or pessimist) –See mistakes as opportunities –Self talk + Self talk

5 Social  Ability to make and keep friends, seek and lend support, and cooperate  Friends, peers, adults, parents, boss, co- workers –Support group Confidentiality Discuss problems Trust

6 Emotional  Expressing feelings in an appropriate way  It’s okay to be… –Angry without violence/abuse –Sadness without depression –Love without obsession/possession  Other emotions to keep in check –Jealousy –Fear –Anxiety

7 Spiritual  Having a spiritual direction or purpose in life –Involves finding & understanding a purpose for life –May involve a religion –Beliefs, morals, values Sharing Caring/kindness Forgiveness Hope Integrity Honesty Citizenship Respect & appreciation of nature/earth

8 Terms  Wellness –Overall state of well-being  Holistic –Considering the “whole” person (all 5 components)  Prevention –Practicing healthy habits to keep a person well and free from health problems Prevention is easier than trying to fix things later

9 7 Lifestyle Factors 1.7-8 hours of sleep (9 for teens) 2.Eat nutritious foods from various food groups 3.Don’t smoke or use tobacco 4.Eat breakfast daily 5.30 min of non-stop activity at least 3 times a week 6.Don’t use drugs & alcohol 7.Maintain recommended weight/body composition

10 Goal of Health Education  Provide accurate information to influence people to change their attitudes so they take positive action about their health
