5 Funding Source The course has been funded by the Fisheries Management Science Programme (FMSP) of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) DFID FMSP also funded the original development and upgrades of the FMSP software and other tools, … … and previous training courses in Africa (Kenya), SE Asia (Vietnam) and India (Mangalore) See FMSP website: http://www.fmsp.org.uk/

6 Purpose of the Course Why are we doing this? To encourage use of FMSP software packages and other outputs, developed to aid fisheries stock assessment. To provide materials for trainers to take back and repeat similar courses at your own organisations (‘training of trainers’). Thereby to improve fisheries management in DFID target areas and to improve livelihoods of poor people (may monitor ‘uptake’!)

7 Some advantages of FMSP software Clear focus on uncertainty - confidence intervals assist adoption of precautionary approach and FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries Non-equilibrium fitting methods in CEDA, and good diagnostic tools Inclusion of stock-recruit relationships in Yield improves realism of YPR approach Bayesian ParFish and empirical approaches designed for co-management arrangements

10 Questions Theory Sessions We hope that everybody will understand the concepts. If you have a question, please ASK! Practical Sessions Working at computers, we will be moving around each of you to answer any questions. If we’re busy, please ask your neighbours if they can help.

11 Housekeeping - hotel and subsistence Per diems cover your evening meals, laundry, telephone calls, minibar and other expenses at the hotel. Your room, breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks and Friday’s course dinner will be paid for directly by the project. Questions?
