Background What do we mean by “lecture recording”? Why now? o Humanities Faculty Plan 2011 o Kent Student Union petition o Competitor analysis 7 of 12 have automated capture <=10 rooms equipped for capture (as at May 2011)

Participant Selection 1.Volunteer form survey to gauge staff experience, attitude, teaching style, technologies used. 2.Module-based selection of representative sample. One autumn & one spring module per volunteering academic school, per campus (where applicable)

Research questions Does the availability of lecture recordings affect student attendance? o Brotherton & Abowd (2004) – no statistically significant effect – opinion o Traphagan et al (2009) - ~10% negative effect on attendance – data o Mentch (2008) – students missing more lectures watched fewer recordings - opinion Mentch Does the availability of lecture recordings affect student achievement?
