3 Expectations of a Midwife Caring for women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth Working and collaborating with others to ensure excellent care for women during pregnancy, labour, their babies & beyond

4 What are the careers in Midwifery? Specialist midwives e.g. high risk care, young people, vulnerable adults Working in hospital or community (or both) Midwifery education Midwifery/ Clinical research work Ward Managers or Midwife Consultants Continuing Professional Development opportunities at Middlesex: e.g. Master’s Level and then Doctorate

5 © Middlesex University What do we mean by Degree Level? As a degree midwife you will need to develop and demonstrate skills in: Critical analysis Decision making Leadership and management Clinical judgement

11 © Middlesex University Shortened Programme (18 months) 1 st 6 months – focus is on study skills and on normal midwifery 2 nd 6 months – Care of complex needs of mother and baby 3 rd 6 months – focus is on dealing with emergencies and deviations from normal Final 12 week consolidation of clinical midwifery practice

12 Modules and Assessments 1 st 6 months Theory 1.Fundamentals of Midwifery (30 credits at Level 5) 2.Midwifery Practice Module (30 credits at Level 5) 3.Evidence Based Practice in Midwifery (30 credits at level 6 Assessments 1.3 hour unseen written exams 2.Midwifery Practice assessment 3.Written Audit exam 4.Literature review on normal midwifery

16 © Middlesex University Programme Requirements Set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Currently programme is 50% theory and 50% practice 78 week programme = 37.5 hours per week All sickness or absence must be made up in order to fulfil the NMC requirement Ten days or more sickness/absence in any one year could lead to discontinuation or deferral A poor sickness/absence record could have implications for future employment – even if you have made up all the time owed

17 © Middlesex University Shortened Midwifery Programme Year Plan Reading weeks Induction period to the university; programme and clinical placement Practice Placements 24/7 shift patterns & on calls 50% Theory & 50% Practice = 37.5 hours per week Out of midwifery practice Gynaecology (1 week) & NNU (3 weeks) University weeks studying modules – 0900 – 1600 hours Annual leave = 10 weeks A variety of assessments – clinical and academic

18 © Middlesex University Salary NHS starting salaries for graduates with midwifery degrees start on over £21,388 a year with opportunity to earn more with overtime and other additional payments, which compares very well with other public sector jobs. The highest paid NHS nurses/midwives can earn up to £97,500 as nurse consultants or consultant midwives or directors of nursing/midwifery
