2 Intro to DNA  DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms.  DNA is double stranded and the two stands form a spiral called a double helix.  DNA replication is possible because the strands of the double helix are complementary and if you have one you can rebuild the other.  DNA replication occurs in the cytoplasm of prokaryotes and in the nucleus of eukaryotes.  DNA replication occurs before cell division because the parent cell needs to pass the genetic information on to its daughter cells.  DNA replication is used for cell reproduction, mitosis, or gamete production, meiosis.

3 DNA Replication The DNA strands are first split in two by helicase. DNA polymerase III is bound by a primer and adds corresponding bases from the leading strand. Okazaki fragments separated by primers are formed for the lagging strand, and are later connected by ligase. DNA polymerase I does proofreading after every base pair is added. Mismatch repair makes more corrections after replication.

4 Number the Steps! ___A primer binds DNA polymerase III binds to the DNA ___Okazaki fragments are added ___Proofreading ___DNA is unwound by helicase ___DNA polymerase III adds corresponding base pairs ___Okazaki fragments are joined together by ligase ___Mismatch repair
