My apologies… I needed to provide you with more background information on immigration policy. Thank you for your patience I’ll give a few examples, and we will return to this after our unit test…

The DREAM Act The purpose of the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act, also called the DREAM Act, is to help those individuals who meet certain requirements, have an opportunity to enlist in the military or go to college and have a path to citizenship which they otherwise would not have without this legislation. Supporters of the DREAM Act believe it is vital not only to the people who would benefit from it, but also the United States as a whole. It would give an opportunity to undocumented immigrant students who have been living in the U.S. since they were young, a chance to contribute back to the country that has given so much to them and a chance to utilize their hard earned education and talents. The following is a list of specific requirements one would need in order to qualify for the current version of the DREAM Act. Must have entered the United States before the age of 16 (i.e. 15 and younger) Must have been present in the United States for at least five (5) consecutive years prior to enactment of the bill Must have graduated from a United States high school, or have obtained a GED, or have been accepted into an institution of higher education (i.e. college/university) Must be between the ages of 12 and 35 at the time of application12 and 35 Must have good moral charactergood moral character

In Alabama The champions of Alabama’s far-reaching immigration law have said that it is intended to drive illegal immigrants from the state by making every aspect of their life difficult. Part of the law which appears to make proof of citizenship or legal residency a requirement even for mundane activities like garbage pickup, dog licenses and flu shots at county health departments.

Arizona Immigration Law (SB 1070) The legislated requires police officers, "when practicable," to detain people they reasonably suspect are in the country without authorization and to verify their status with federal officials, unless doing so would hinder an investigation or emergency medical treatment. The law also makes it a state crime — a misdemeanor — to not carry immigration papers. In addition, it allows people to sue local government or agencies if they believe federal or state immigration law is not being enforced.

Big question for today What rights should Americans be entitled to as part of the US military?

The military had a policy that limited the rights of certain individuals… We are going to read two versions of it. Silently read version one and answer the questions. Be prepared to share your answers. Now read version two. Silently read version two and answer the questions. Be prepared to share your answers.

“Don’t ask, don’t tell”— version one The presence in the armed forces of persons who are Muslim would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability. […] A member of the armed forces shall be separated from the armed forces under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense if one or more of the following findings is made and approved in accordance with procedures set forth in such regulations: (1) That the member has engaged in, attempted to engage in, or solicited another to engage in religious activities related to the Muslim faith (2) That the member has stated that he or she is a Muslim, practices Islam, or words to that effect… (3) That the member has married or attempted to marry a person that is Muslim…

1.Why might the military believe that Muslims pose an “unacceptable risk” to the military as an institution? 2.What 3 things could get a person of the Islamic faith kicked out of the military? 3. In your opinion, is this policy in violation of the civil rights of Muslims? Explain.

“Don’t ask, don’t tell”— version two The presence in the armed forces of persons who demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability. […] A member of the armed forces shall be separated from the armed forces under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense if one or more of the following findings is made and approved in accordance with procedures set forth in such regulations: (1) That the member has engaged in, attempted to engage in, or solicited another to engage in a homosexual act or acts. […] (2) That the member has stated that he or she is a homosexual or bisexual, or words to that effect. […] (3) That the member has married or attempted to marry a person known to be of the same biological sex.

1.Why might the military believe that homosexuals pose an “unacceptable risk” to the military as an institution? 2.What 3 things could get a person that is homosexual kicked out of the military? 3.In your opinion, is this policy in violation of the civil rights of homosexuals? Explain.

“Don’t ask, don’t tell”—let’s define it using the law in front of you…

DIRECTIONS: In order to better understand “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” we need to hear arguments from top government officials on the issue. Read the questions below to prepare for reading the article. Then, read the article below with the class. Finally, answer the questions. 1.Who are the opponents of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that are quoted in the article? Why do opponents believe that the policy should be repealed? 2.Who are the supporters of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that are quoted in the article? Why do they believe that the policy should not be repealed? 3. What further information would you want to know about the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy? 4. At this point, do you think the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy should be repealed? Why or why not?

Top Defense Officials Seek to End ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ By ELISABETH BUMILLER, February 3, 2010ELISABETH BUMILLER WASHINGTON — The nation’s top two defense officials called Tuesday for an end to the 16-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, a major step toward allowing openly gay men and women to serve in the United States military for the first time. “No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens,” Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee.Mike MullenJoint Chiefs of Staff As a murmur swept through a hearing room packed with gay rights leaders, Admiral Mullen said it was his personal belief that “allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.”

DIRECTIONS: In February of 2010, the New York Times asked students to post their opinions to this topic online. Their responses are listed below. Read each argument and highlight or underline any points that you agree with or perhaps hadn’t considered before. Then, write your own opinion piece to be posted online I can realy only see one side of this argument, and that is that they should get rid of this “dont ask, dont tell” law. I am actually bisexual myself and have alot of gay and lesbian friends, this topic in a sence hits home because I was considering joining the military when I was 18; im not just going to stay silent about WHO I AM in order to serve my country. “Allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.” I completley agree with this, it WOULD be the righ thing to do for so many reasons, one being that this is the military of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, where we are supposed to be a free country, its simply un-american to have soldiers at heart who may be gay or lesbian to not let people know about there sexuality. Just because someone has a defferent sexual prefferance about them does not mean they are different from any other american soldier who serves in this military today. We should not have to keep quiet about who we are. — josie
