1 INFORMATION Presentation Meeting the demands of the European Water Framework Directive may require performing quick, yet precise, models of groundwater flow and transport. The analytic element method is ideally suited for such an objective. It is a numerical method based on the superposition of closed-form analytical expressions. As such, it is easy to use and highly accurate. The objective of this short course is to explain the application of the analytic element method to the modeling of groundwater flow. The course will cover the basic principles of the method, along with its application to a variety of problems. The attendees will receive a cd with the educational version of the computer program SLAEM (Single Layer Analytic Element Model) and a cd with pdf files that contain the relevant portions of the textbook Groundwater Mechanics, Prentice Hall, 1989 written by the instructor of this course. 2 PROGRAMM Tuesday, 15 November Basic equations, vertically integrated flow, the Dupuit-Forchheimer approximation. Elementary Analytic Solutions. Superposition; method of images. Elementary simulation with SLAEM. Principles of the analytic element method. Line elements. Modeling streams. Modeling inhomogeneities. Wednesday, 16 November Construction of a regional model using analytic elements. Data will be presented that the participants of the course will use to construct the groundwater model. Comparison between analytic element models and discrete numerical models (e.g. MODFLOW or finite element models). Thursday, 17 November Advanced analytic elements for modeling general vector fields. Multi-aquifer flow; modeling examples. Transient flow. Contaminant transport; simulation of dispersion using a numerical laboratory based on analytic element models. Presentation of the design of publicly available object-oriented libraries of analytic elements, programmed in Fortran 95 Professor Otto D.L. Elementary groundwater modeling skills (computer simulations). Elementary mathematics: algebra, differentiation, functions of two variables and partial differentiation.
