4 511 Trends Personalized Services  Receive information based on user profile  Social networking “Twitter”  Washington DOT, Kansas DOT, Rhode Island DOT, New York, St Louis, etc  Facebook  Texas, Michigan, Virginia, Oregon, FHWA, etc Challenges  Distracted Drivers – 511 Deployment Coalition developing guidance  Relationship between public and private information providers – new serves from Inrix, Nokia, ATT, etc – defining what the public provides in this new environment

5 5 511 System Updates Virginia Statewide 511 SystemVirginia Statewide 511 System  Will hit the 8 million call mark in December 2009  Recently launched a regional Twitter Service  Plans to introduce applications for mobiles, pdas and other devices  Setting up large screen displays at key welcome centers and malls that will display speed and travel time information

6 6 511 System Updates Maryland Statewide 511 SystemMaryland Statewide 511 System  RFP issued in May 2009  Currently working on changing the funding source for this procurement  Vendor selection decision expected in the 1 st quarter of 2010  System expected to launch in late 2010

7 7 511 System Updates Washington D.C.Washington D.C.  The District has plans to integrate its information with either the Virginia or the Maryland 511 Systems.  Currently the District provides data to RITIS (Regional Integrated Transportation Information System )  RITIS is working to automate data sharing, dissemination, and archiving of transit and transportation management data in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C.

9 IntelliDrive(SM) Long term effort with AASHTO/Auto Industry/USDOT since 2004 We need to pay attention Because:  Challenging Program, but great potential for safety and mobility benefits  Proposed NHTSA/FHWA regulatory or policy decision in 2013!!! Activities underway on national and state levels

11 I-95 Corridor Coalition What is the I-95 Corridor Coalition?What is the I-95 Corridor Coalition?  Began in the early 1990’s  Volunteer organization  A large alliance of transportation agencies, toll authorities, and public safety agencies  Agencies up and down the I-95 Corridor from Maine to Florida, + Canada  Provide a forum for key decision and policy makers 11

12 I-95 Corridor Coalition ITS Initiatives Safe Trip 21 21 Probe data Safety emphases—(speed; distracted drivers;etc.) Freight movement emphases 511 Security/emergency response/incident response

13 Reauthorization and ITS AASHTO supports a new Operations and Management program---$3B per year RD&T : increase ITS to $150 m per year; increase the safety RD&T pots of all the modes; Implement SHRP ---reliability and safety $50 m per year for VMT user fee pilots Performance based programs
