Plagiarism, Copied Text and Text-Based Evidence Your own COE, your own graduation! For Washington State students working on the COE

Why should you watch this video? Plagiarism Copied text Text-based evidence. Do your own work! The consequences of plagiarism.

Definitions of all three Plagiarism is cheating. Copied text is copying part or the whole of an article, poem, or story. Text-based evidence is using a few sentences of the text and inserting into the students answer.

Okay, so what does plagiarism mean? Intentionally selecting someone elses work and calling it your own! A decision to do something unethical. Trying to improve your work without doing the work.

Are there differences between plagiarism in reading and writing COEs? YES Reading = Text Writing = Topic

There are a few types of plagiarism Copy another students work Book, a magazine, an internet site Websites like cheathouse.com Pay someone else

What happens then? They Get Caught The student collection is invalidatedit doesnt earn a score or count towards graduation.

How? The COE scorers are trained teachers. The investigators search the internet for articles and cheating sites.

Example of a plagiarized COE reading work sample from June 2011 COE Question: What was the setting of the story? In her influential work of feminism, The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopin reflects the gloomy marital status of the women in the early 1900s through the life of the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard. Because of the master/slave relationship with her husband, Mrs. Mallard only feels freedom when her husband dies.

Example of a plagiarized COE writing work sample from June 2011 Should students be required to wear school uniforms? Why or why not? Let me persuade you by letting you know that there are many benefits of wearing school uniforms. First of all, school uniforms consist of a limited range of clothing, including footwear and head wear….Even in the business world, most of the wealthy people are professionally dressed each time they are in a conference room, or when they are signing important documents.

Copied Text: Why isnt it plagiarism? Only happens in a Reading COE Copying part or the whole article, poem, or story the student read Doesnt invalidate the collection Score of 0 Not plagiarism because the student didnt go to an outside source

Copied Text happens for many reasons ELL students sometimes know the ideas but dont know the words Students dont understand article Lack of effort

Transitions How do students change from using copied text to text-based evidence to create a great answer to a COE Reading question?

Definition of text-based evidence Understand the language of the question Answer first then look for evidence to support Paraphrase

How do I use text-based evidence to support my answer? First, introduce the author before the quote. Start with…The author, Larry Canale said… then put his words into quotations: Jackie Robinson may have received the ultimate honor, however, when all of baseball retired his number in 1998.

Youre not done with your text-based evidence yet… Add your voice. What did you think about it? Use phrases like: I think, I believe, The author was right, the society was wrong…

Example of student work COE Question: Evaluate the decision to retire Jackie Robinsons uniform number from all of the teams in the Major League of Baseball. Use text-based evidence to support your response. I believe that it was the right decision to retire Jackie Robinsons number because he didnt just excel at baseball he overcame a major problem in our country. Larry Canale, the author, quotes Branch Rickey Ive been looking for a great black ball player, but I need more than a great player, I need a man who will carry the flag for his race. This is really important in my opinion, because Jackie knew that he was a great leader and a superior baseball player. He was the most valuable black baseball player in the twentieth-century.

Thanks so much for watching the video! Your teacher is going to give you a COE Student Agreement Form. Please sign it. It says that you watched this video and know the differences between plagiarism, copied text and text-based evidence. We look forward to receiving your COEs!
