2 Training Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary says it’s “the process by which one is taught so as to make fit, qualified or proficient.” In the secular world, it can occur in a formal class setting, “on-the-job” (OJT) or one-on-one with a mentor. So, how do we train men to be elders?

3 Foundation Premises Elder = Bishop = Overseer “…If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.” (1 Tim. 3:1) Desire + Humility = “trainable” heart Points to consider

4 Points to Consider How do we train men to: Study Serve Teach Show hospitality Shepherd

5 Study “(For a bishop)…holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught,” (Titus 1:9) In Christian homes at an early age With a Christian spouse, family member or close friend In church Bible class program By self study of the Bible

6 Serve Peter’s exhortation…“serving as overseers” (1 Pet. 5:2) How? “Willingly…eagerly…as examples to the flock” (1 Pet. 5:2-3) Christ, the ultimate example (Matt. 20:28) A servant puts the needs of others ahead of his own. Outgrowth of Bible study and application

7 Teach “A bishop then must be…able to teach;” (1 Tim. 3:2) Study + Serve = Teach Bible classes Bible studies Practice makes perfect

8 Show Hospitality “A bishop then must be…hospitable,” (1 Tim. 3:2) Hospitable is to be fond of guests or given to hospitality Trainable qualification Support of spouse is key to success Avoid excuses, practice makes perfect

9 Shepherd Peter’s exhortation…“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you,” (1 Pet. 5:2) Christ, the ultimate example (John 10:11) An elder’s highest priority How? Guide, feed, protect, nurture and sacrifice. Eternal accountability (Heb. 13:17)
