1 Effective Participator
Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager Team Worker 16th September 2013 Objective: Can you solve problems with compounds measures, giving correct units? (Grade C) Compound Measures 3 Starter 300 cm = feet 96 km = miles 18 litres= gallons 165 pounds = kilograms 12 pints = litres Keywords 10 60 4 75 6.857 Kilometres per hour Compound Rate of change

2 Compound measures in real life

3 What does compound mean?
Compound measure is a measure which involves two units. Examples The units of measure tell you how to calculate Km/h will mean Km ÷ hours MPG Km/litre Km/h Litres per minute

4 To get us ready How many minutes in an hour? What is 15 minutes as a fraction of an hour? What is 36 minutes as a decimal of an hour? How many minutes is 0.3 hours? Write 5.7 hours in hours and minutes? Write 562 minutes in hours and minutes? 60 0.6 18 5 h 42m 9 h 22m

5 Example Petrol is leaking from a tank at a rate of 5 litres per hour.
Work out how much petrol leaks in 30 minutes 4 hours 6 minutes The petrol tank holds 100 litres. How long does it take for the tank to be empty?

6 Questions Green A car travels 260km and use 20 litres of petrol.
Work out the average rate of petrol usage? (km/l) Estimate the petrol used when travelling 78km? Amber A windmill turns at a rate of 12˚ per second. How many degrees does the windmill turn in 20 seconds. How long will it take for the windmill to make a full turn? Red On a long journey a car travels 16km per litre of petrol. How many litres of petrol the car uses per kilometre? How far could we travel on 48 litres of fuel?

7 Answers Green a) 13 km/l b) 5 litres Amber a) 240 degrees
b) 30 seconds Red a) litres b) 768 kilometres

8 To finish... Water is flowing into a tank. In 5 minutes, 300 litres flow in. Work out the average rate of flow of water into the tank? There were 90 litres of water in the tank before water flow started. When full the tank holds 1200 litres. How long did it take for the tank to fill?
