Just imagine that you and your family have decided to purchase a piece of land in your region What 2 things that you would keep in mind when purchasing the land? How would you let others know that this property belongs to you? Would you be upset if someone came in and took your land?

3 That is what the Spaniards did when they came to Texas
That is what the Spaniards did when they came to Texas. How do you think the Native Americans felt? What did the Spaniards use to get control of the land?

4 We are going to study why the Spaniards used the missions system to gain control of Texas. It is important to know where these missions were built and why the locations of these missions are vital to our history today.

8 SPAIN BUILDS MISSIONS Feels threaten by France-needs to control the land- GOALS Spread Christianity by converting Native Americans to Christianity Teach Spanish customs to the Native Americans & lead to adopt the Spanish way of life. Build new settlements Establishes & strengthen ownership over Texas by colonizing the New World

9 Definitions Missions-a settlement set up in Indian territory.
Friars (Catholic affiliated) lead the missions Self-sufficient Invited the Native Americans to live with them Taught them Christianity, language, customs, and farming methods Goal to turn Native Americans into royal Spanish citizens; assumed it would take 10 years and then move on to est. a new mission

10 Presidio- a fort that protected the missions from unfriendly Indians & helped control the Indians who lived in the missions.

11 Villa: located between a mission and a presidio.
It was a small town around a mission and a presidio that provided goods and services.

12 Daily Life Recruited Native Americans Religious instruction
Indians lived and worked on missions Ranching and farming Craft work like sewing, blacksmith, soap & bricklaying Choice: food & protection from other tribes Indians were controlled & punished Religious instruction Taught the Christian faith

13 Problems with the system
Disease Indian dislike the mission life Too few Native Americans to do the work Rejected it Retain own culture (hunting and ceremonies) Soldier had little pay Different uses of the missions Protection - learn work skills food

14 Decline France’s threat was no longer due to the end of the French & Indian War; Spanish spread to thin across Texas; presidio’s not able to protect missions from Indian attacks. Native Americans did not want to be converted. Money, poor supplies, treatment of Indians Missions closed, failing to settle Texas

15 Legacy Settling Texas A new culture was born within the missions
New culture was a mix of Spaniards and Native Americans Much of Spanish culture still exist today. -buildings, names of towns, food, customs, ________?
