5. Why this session? The state Social Studies standards and assessments have changed as of 2014-2015. Our instructional practices must also change to meet the rigor of the new standards and assessment. One of the most important changes must be in the levels of questions that we ask our students.

6. Depth of Knowledge (DOK) What is DOK? Level of Complexity (measures a student’s Depth of Knowledge) Level 1 – Recall/Reproduction Level 2 – Skill/Concept Level 3 – Strategic Thinking Level 2 – Extended Thinking

7. Depth of Knowledge (DOK) What are DOK levels? -The new assessment includes items with DOK levels 1-3. -Our students need practice with questions from each of these levels. -Teachers need to understand how to craft questions of all three levels for students to gain practice with such items.

TNReady Summer Module 2 We will: View sample assessment questions through the lens of a student as well as a teacher to analyze necessary skills for successful completion Link sample questions to appropriate state standards Note verb descriptors in specific state standards, and comparing them to the question asked Create rigorous stimuli-based multiple choice questions Collaborate about characteristics of effective questioning

9. Crafting Questions Form groups of 3-4 Select a stimuli from your packet to use Craft your question on chart paper
