Predicate The verb and other words about the subject

Predicate The predicate is the side of the sentence that says something about the subject. The simple predicate is the verb: Hamlet went over to the crater at the foot of the escarpment. The complete predicate is everything that is said about the subject: Hamlet went to the crater and gathered three bags of comet dust.

Compound verb “When the stars threw down their spears And watered heaven with their tears Did He smile His work to see?” - William Blake

Subject-Predicate set The combination of simple subject and simple predicate is always present as the nucleus of every sentence. It’s the minimum requirement for a sentence. – Also accompanying the subject-predicate set might be adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, etc. Additionally, a sentence may contain more than one subject-predicate set. – Next slide, please...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. -Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

Remember: The predicate must agree with the number of the subject. If the subject is singular, the verb must be singular. The secret to subject-verb agreement lies in acute awareness of the true subject and its simple predicate as a pair. This is the worst mistake. Don’t make it!
