(Mrtinez, Roser, & Strecker, 1998/1999) * Children read aloud from a script using their voices and facial expressions to share the story. An opportunity for students to develop fluency, using expressiveness, intonation when rehearsing the text.

I never saw two such follish fellows as you! M: What do you mean, old woman? FW: Why are you two walking beside your donkey when one of you could be riding? M: Thank you, old woman, for your kind advice. You ride on the mule, my son, and I will walk alongside. S: Yes, father. FM: That is a disgrace! A real disgrace! M: What are you talking about, old man? FM: As I have always said, there is no respect shown to old age these days.

M: Thank you for your advice, old man. Get off the donkey, son. You walk and I will ride. SW: I can’t believe my eyes! M: What is it you can’t believe, old woman? SW: How do you have the nerve to rie the donkey when your poor little boy can hardly keep up? M: Thank you for your advice, old woman. Get up on the donkey with me, my son. S: Yes, father. SM: You two should be ashamed of yourselves! M: What do you mean, old man!

You both look so much stronger than your donkey that I should think it would be easier for you to carry him. M: Thank you for your advice, old man. N: The miller and his son get off the donkey and carry him. After a while, the donkey becomes so heavy that they accidentally drop him in the river. S: Oh dear! Look what has happened to our donkey! M: Poor me! Poor me! Yes, we have lost our donkey! Moral: You can’t please everybody. Just be yourself! Just be yourself!
