American Heart Association Recommendations To give the victim the best chance of survival, 3 actions must occur within the first moments of a cardiac arrest: (1) activation of the emergency medical response system, (2) provision of CPR, and (3) operation of an AED. 4. NMH Cardiac Arrest Policy & Procedure A new patient care policy-- Policy # 5.67 Emergency Medical Response: Cardiac, Airway, Medical, Pediatric and Rapid Response Emergency Team--has been drafted and is pending approval. In preparation, AED education and competency is necessary.

5. AED Education Plan Why? Code team & non-ICU nurses reporting need AED’s are not being used in a timely manner. Defibrillation is occurring upon arrival of code team--which may take longer than three minutes JCAHO revised standards for individual in-hospital resuscitation capabilities to include evaluation of resuscitation policies, procedures, processes, protocols, equipment, staff training, and outcome review. Registered nurses in Feinberg, Galter, Olson, Stone, and Prentice Women’s Hospital, who have not had AED education with return demonstration in the past six months. Who is training? ICU, RRT, Cath Lab, CSU, PACU, and medicine nurses, whom will participate in AED training sessions taught by Rene Catalano, R.N., and Margaret Duggan, R.N.

7. AED Education Plan When “Train the trainer” sessions to begin as early as next week Each of the 39 instructors will be asked to work two 4 hour sessions over a two-week period.
