Selective Breeding Selective Breeding – In Chickens Merlyn Lobo 10 – ME

WHAT IS SELECTIVE BREEDING?  Breeding plants and animals to obtain desired characteristics  Selection of animals and plants for particular characteristics over many generations.  e.g. chickens for egg production  Selective breeding breeds out unwanted alleles from the population, deliberately restricting the variation  Over generations of breeding out variation it leads to a population where all animals have the originally desired qualities but massively reduced genetic diversity.

Some Types of Selective Breeds – Chickens…(1) HYBRID CHICKENS For lots of eggs every year then you should look at the hybrids. These have been created by recent intensive selective breeding by man. For example…We use the black rock (a breed of chicken) is bred from specially selected pure breed parent stock. The result of this breeding is that they are much more productive than the present day utility pure breeds and have superb disease resistance in comparison to the other hybrids.

Some Types of Selective Breeds – Chickens…(2) UTILITY PURE BREEDS If you like the idea of pure breeds you will get birds with fascinating history, a wider variety of sizes and plumage and, if you choose carefully, pure bred chickens will provide you with eggs that will easily fulfill a family's needs. Farmers to ensure that the stock you get are from known utility parent flocks.

Different Types of Eggs EGG LAYERS Do you want white eggs? Leghorn Do you want deepest brown - Welsumer Or Marans are good Mid brown - Rhode Island Red

Advantages of Selective Breeding in Chickens Some benefits to selective breeding is that breeders get to choose which animals fit their criteria, so more of the right kind of animal can be produced, which makes more product. E.g A farmer wants chickens that produce bigger eggs and more eggs, not chickens that don’t produce any. The farmers now have the ability to choose what chickens they want to increase egg production and the size of the eggs. Chickens may also be selectively bred for more meat than the normal chickens In the long term, it actually provides an advantage if organisms have dissimilar pairs of genes for any hereditary characteristic.

Disadvantages of Selective Breeding of Chickens  Overuse of selective breeding can result in genetic disorders, such as inbred depression.  Selective breeding of particular genes runs the risk of losing some of the other genes from the gene pool altogether, which is IRREVERSIBLE.
