1 Math Study Group Meeting #1 September 16, 2014 Facilitator: Simi Minhas Math Achievement Coach, Network 204

2 Purpose of this Study Group Deepen the knowledge of how to support teachers Develop and provide professional development opportunities aligned to teachers’ and students’ needs Arrange inter-visitations with other schools in the network to share best practices Develop and improve coaching practices Creating lab sites or model classrooms within a school

3 Introduction Activity Please find someone in the room that you have never met before. Introduce yourself to that person, and find out the following information about them, and their school: Location and demographics The math program that they’re using Some of the school’s successes and challenges in math What would they like to shift/change/impact this year?

4 Goals Strengthen teacher practice Improve student achievement Track student progress through ongoing school wide assessment Strengthen coaching practices Provide meaningful professional development opportunities to teachers, based on their needs.

5 A.P. Supports the lead math teacher to strengthen their coaching. Collaborates with the lead to support professional development in math. Empowers the math lead to open up her room to share best practices when possible. Establishes coherent assessment, and data tracking practices in the building. Monitors those practices, and makes them a part of teacher team meetings, and ongoing professional development. MATH LIAISON (math lead) Attends the professional development at the network level, and shares that information at the school level. Provides professional development to teacher teams, with guidance and collaboration from school leaders. Provides content support to colleagues (planning, modelling lessons, inter-visitations etc.) MATH CONTENT (new/ developing teacher) Deepens her content knowledge in mathematics, and strengthens her craft Can use the modelling strategies, and multiple ways of solving problems to provide PD for other teachers who may have similar needs. Can also provide workshops for the parents as a parent engagement piece on Tuesdays.

6 Assessments Pre-assessments and post-assessments for each topic Some questions in the post assessment should be open ended that allow for error analysis Item analysis to track growth from pre- assessment to post-assessment Rubrics for problem solving

9 Goals for the Second Meeting Please bring in samples of pre and post assessments, and data tracking sheets for a few grades. Determine what coherent rubrics teachers want to use across grades for problem solving Determine the systems you will have in place to track student progress QR Indicator: 2.2 Align assessments to curricula, use on-going assessment and grading practices, and analyze information on student learning outcomes to adjust instructional decisions at the team and classroom levels
