Nuclear Energy By: Kenza Charania & Julia Marques

Origins Nuclear energy is man-made Caused by the splitting and fusion of the nuclei of the atoms Produced naturally by the Sun & stars Created by uranium, plutonium, and fissile, producing a chain reaction

Transformation into useable energy Through fission, heat is released, then contained and stored, to be used as electrical energy Also converted into streams which drive a turbine which then powers a generator http://www.ehow.com/video_4753983_wh ere-does-nuclear-energy- come.html?ref=Track2 http://www.ehow.com/video_4753983_wh ere-does-nuclear-energy- come.html?ref=Track2

Common uses Used in developed countries Places where it can be contained and stored carefully and properly Used in areas where there are a lot of things to power, for example in Tokyo

Advantages/Disadvantages Doesn’t contribute to global warming Doesn’t produce soot Large power- generating capacity Lower carbon dioxide levels Waste lasts up to 500,000 years Very risky High known risk in accidents Unknown risks Long construction time Costly Damages the Earth due to the mining for uranium Requires a large infrastructure and investment Poses threats to terrorism

Effect on the environment Long-term effects such as cancer and deformities due to particles being released in the atmosphere Mining the minerals harms the environment Mining the minerals harms the environment The levels of waste produced is high, and there are no long-term waste storage sites
