Today Thursday 9/10/15 you will… 1.Explain why the special properties of water make it essential for life. You need 1.ISN 2.Something to write with 3.Unit 1 learning goals (Blue paper) Glue page on to ISN page 16 and complete ISN page 17 – Title Macromolecule Unit

Honors IBIS Trip Tomorrow meet in Mrs. Zona’s Room 1 st period. Make sure you bring your lunch and a change of clothes Your cell phones will be taken when you arrive and locked in an office Dress appropriately or you will not go!!!

Did you know? Koala and humans are the only animals with unique fingerprints. Koalas sleep up to 18 hours a day Koalas don’t normally need to drink as they get all the moisture they need from the gumleaves. However, they can drink if necessary, such as in times of drought when the leaves may not contain sufficient moisture

Did you know wet koalas are super creepy?

What do you notice about the H 2 O molecule(s) below?

Polarity makes water a special molecule! ! Solute= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASLUY2U 1M-8

Polarity Polarity “sticky” 1.H 2 O atoms - opposite charges  attracted like magnets  “sticky” 2.Why do we care? – The Polarity, the Stickiness Gives water its other properties…. - - + + - - + + + +

The oxygen end has a - charge The hydrogen end has a + charge. Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High Specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity

Water is an excellent Solvent Ex. Kool-aid Solute + Solvent = Solution Kool-aid Mix + Water = Oh Yeah! Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High Specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity material added to the liquid that will dissolve (The smaller amount) Liquid that items are added to (The Larger amount) Liquid that all materials are distributed equally

Water is… The Universal Solvent Weak H bonds allow it to bond with other sub…. So it DISSOLVES STUFF!

Water is attracted to itself + + - + + - + + - Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High Specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity Cohesion is the attraction of molecules of the same substance

Cohesion A.Sticking to itself! B.Water attracted to other water  “sticky”  Droplets C.Why do we care? –Keeps water/blood together as it moves through plant/blood vessels

Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High Specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity Water attraction (cohesion) forms a thin ‘skin’ barrier on surface. Cohesion at work

Attraction of water to other materials Ex. Water sticking to a glass, Water droplets on a car, water droplets on a window or wall Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High Specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity

This is how water moves up plant’s stems! Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High Specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity Adhesion and cohesion together cause water to move against gravity

Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Polarity 1.Water EXPANDS upon freezing  2.making it less dense  3.so it FLOATS!

Universal Solvent Capillary Action Surface Tension High specific Heat Density Cohesion Adhesion Energy Storage Hydrogen Bond Water… Absorbs heat slowly Retains heat / Energy Longer maintains temp. of Earth maintains temp. of Organisms Homeostasis

High Specific Heat: High Heat Capacity A. Water absorbs a lot of heat before it is affected A.Why do we care? –HOMEOSTASIS!!!  maintaining internal stability/balance –Maintains temp. of earth

Importance of Specific Heat capacity 1.Helps in regulating temperatures in a pond: 2.This same concept can be expanded to a world-wide scale. A.Oceans & lakes help regulate the temperature ranges… 1)Water near cities, take longer to heat up & longer to cool, so cities near the oceans will tend to have less change & less extreme temps than inland 2)Midwest states, such as Nebraska, will have colder winters & hotter summers than cities on coast! A.Fish stay “happy” because the heat capacity means the temp. of the pond will stay relatively the same from day to night.

Properties of Water Video Clip Great Review of Water Properties https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVmU3CL xvgU

Water Quiz-Question 1 1.Name The property: I washed my car yesterday. When I finished rinsing it off, it still looked wet and there were all these droplets of water stuck to my car. Even on the windshield that is sloped.

Water Quiz-Question 2 3. Water is considered ___________ because it has a positive and negative end.

Water Quiz-Question 3 4. When water is attracted to itself, like forming a droplet.

Water Quiz-Question 4 5. A solution is made of what two items __________ + ____________ = solution

Water Quiz-Question 5 7. What property is described? I saw a bug walking across the water! He didn’t sink through, and it looked like the water bent underneath it.

Water Quiz- Question 6 8. Areas of land along a large lake or an ocean, seem cooler than other areas near them. What property of water proves this to be true?

Water Quiz- Question 7 9. What type of bonding occurs between hydrogen atoms and other types of atoms?

Water Quiz- Question 8 10. What property of water is described? I put blue food coloring in my vase of roses. 2 days later my roses turned purple!
