2 What does deficient, perfect, and abundant mean?! Deficient: Shortage of something, less amount. The desert is deficient of water. When a number is deficient that means that the sum of its proper factors is LESS than itself. Perfect: Exact or equal amount of something When a number is perfect that means that the sum of its proper factors is EQUAL to itself. Abundant: A lot of something, a greater amount The forest is abundant with trees. When a number is abundant that means that the sum of its proper factors is GREATER than itself. A proper factor is all the factors of a number besides itself.

4 Lets talk about the factor game… Good MovesBad Moves 19 Why? Because the sum of its proper factors is less than the original number. 24 Why? Because the sum of its proper factors is greater than the original number. Choosing 6 would be an okay move. Why?

5 How would you classify these numbers if one is deficient, one is abundant, and one is perfect? 5 612 In which circle would 22 belong? In which circle would 21 belong? In which circle would 23 belong?

6 Go find out which numbers 2-49 are abundant, deficient, or perfect. Justify classifying based on the sum of each number’s proper factors.
