Topic #1: Activism Final Review Mr. Patten & Ms. Dennis

What is activism? The policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.

Creation of St. Baldricks Created by Tim Kenney, Enda McDonnell and John Bender in 1999 Worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.

Work of St. Baldrick’s Two-thirds of children treated for childhood cancer will suffer long-term effects from treatment including: – loss of hearing and sight – heart disease – secondary cancers – learning disabilities – infertility and more. Less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is directed to childhood cancer research. St. Baldricks works to provide proper funding for the research of cancers that effect children.

Why does St. Baldrick’s exist? The St. Baldrick’s Foundation exists to change these realities by working with leading pediatric oncologists. They work to: – Provide funding for hospitals to open high impact clinical trials – Provide funding for research – Provide training for the next generation of researchers

What does St. Baldrick’s do with money raised? The St. Baldrick’s Foundation takes great care with every donor dollar, keeping the staff small, the expenses low and directing every possible dollar to childhood cancer research.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation In 2013, St. Baldrick’s volunteers raised more than $30 million dollars through head shaving events and other opportunities. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has raised over $100 million dollars in childhood cancer research grants. Last year Mepham raised $59,620.00 at our 3 rd St. Baldrick’s event.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation In November, we raised $3,882 for the St. Baldrick’s foundation at our annual Battle of the Classes event. This year’s Chop Your Locks for Charity Event will be held on March 19, 2014 at 6pm in the South Gym.
