 Sun Microsystems develops the most innovative products and services that power the network economy.  Guided by a singular vision – “The Network is the Computer”.  Sun drives network participation through shared innovation, community development and open source leadership. 2

 Sun provides a diversity of software, systems, services, and microelectronics that power everything from consumer electronics, to developer tools and the world's most powerful datacenters  core brands include the Java technology platform, the Solaris operating system, StrorageTek and the UltraSPARC prossesor. 3

Employees: 33,350 worldwide. Fiscal Year 2008 Q2 Revenues: $3.615 billion. Locations: Sun conducts business in more than 100 countries around the globe. 4

1982: Getting Started Incorporated in February 1982, with four employees. First workstation introduced. It includes TCP/IP, now known as the Internet protocol suite. 5

1983: First Big Break 1984: The Big Idea 1985: Shining Brighter 1986: Extending the Enterprise 1987: Big Business 1988: Getting Bigger 1989: Welcome to the New World 1990: Making Power more Afforda 1991: Setting New Standards 1992: Making a Name for Ourselves 1993: One Million and Counting 1994: Enterprise Computing Comes of Age 6

It was adopted more quickly across the software industry than any other new technology in computing history. Realizing its potential, many of Sun’s competitors, including Microsoft, had rushed to license Java. Microsoft began to move aggressively to counter Sun’s every move They were able to persuade thousands of software developers to use Microsoft’s version of Java Sun continued to win the battles, but who would win the war? Java represented a major part of Sun’s future success. Its continuing development would spur sales growth for Sun’s Internet servers, software tools, and microchips. 7

1996: At Home in Cyberspace Sun was generating nearly $1.3 billion in revenues from server sales 8

1997: Reaching New Heights As Sun’s server business flourished, intense competition and shrinking margins began to erode the company’s core workstation business. Following a 21 percent growth year in 1997 1998: New Generation of Java Technology Driven by the rapid growth of the Internet and increased demand for networked systems, the server market reached quarterly sales of over $16 billion in 1998. 9

Server Industry Market Share 1998 10

Abbreviated Financial Statement 11

Java is software for writing programs that can run on any device connected to a network. This unique versatility means that people working on completely different operating systems can work on the same document or play the same game as long as the program is written in Java. This is a fundamentally different vision of computing from the PC and fits perfectly with the World Wide Web’s way of doing things. 12

JAVA IN THE MARKETPLACE Java was poised to affect the technology market in three important ways. Versatility “write once, run anywhere” Savings “reduce creative, distribution, and transfer costs” Competition  “We always thought we were onto something with Java—that it was our one big chance to challenge Microsoft and change the economics of the business.” 13

1999: Setting Rigorous Standards 2000: Emphasizing People, Processes, and Programs 2001: Nth Ready 2002: We Make the Net Work 2003: Reducing Cost and Complexity 2004: Evolution of the Network Computer 2005: The Emergence of Utility Computing 2006: Systems Innovation and Eco-Responsible Servers 2007: 25 Years of Innovation 2008: The Year of Open 14

Thank you 15

We announced a number of strategic alliances over the past year with some of the leading companies in the high-technology industry. These alliances have the potential to extend our market reach by introducing our technology to an expanded customer base Sun and AMD Sun and Microsoft Sun and IBM Sun and Google Sun and Fujitsu Sun and Intel 16
