3 Fit to be Tied  The Democratic-Republicans wanted to return the country to a More fair and free government  Federalists wanted to avoid the rule of Radicals fearing the French Revolution  Jefferson Beat Adams 73-65 BUT Democratic Republican Aaron Burr also earned 73 votes  A tie had to be Broken!

4 Sounds Like a GOT MILK Commercial  The House of Representatives would break the tie in the election but were split on who to support  On the 36 th vote, Jefferson became president due to the support of Alexander Hamilton  Hamilton would later be killed By Aaron Burr in a Gun Fight

5 Talent Show  Jefferson quickly became one of our most talented and progressive presidents designing much of Washington DC  He also designed his mansion home at Monticello  He was also a violinist, horseman, scientist and devoted reader  He Brought his many talents to his governing style

6 Down on the Farm  Jefferson preached the common life to help build morals and domestic values  Jefferson Wanted to avoid cities to avoid overcrowding as in Europe  Jefferson took his Philosophy of Modesty and applied it to his everyday life to role model such behavior

7 Putting toothpaste Back Into the Toothpaste dispenser  Jefferson undid many unpopular Acts and Taxes the Federalists Passed  Jefferson started to reduce federal employees and military spending to compensate for lost tax revenue  Jefferson also repaid public debt to Americans using tariffs and land sales to repay them

8 Court Marshall  Before Adams left he appointed as many federal Judges to the federal courts to keep federalists in a role of power  Since Justices were appointed for life, Jefferson was powerless to change them  Adams also appointed John Marshall as chief justice where he would serve for over 3 decades

9 Bury Bury Mad  Chief Justice Marshall would preside over the Case of Marbury v. Madison(1803)  When James Madison Refused to Appoint William Marbury Justice of the Peace Marbury Sued  Marbury’s Appointment Violated the Law of the Constitution and the Decision was upheld

10 Marshall Law  Marbury v. Madison set up Judicial Review giving the Supreme Court final say on constitutional matters  Marshall seized new powers for the supreme court, but since it was used to the Democratic Republican’s benefit, Jefferson could not fight it  This decision would set up a lasting Checks and Balances system still in effect today
