7 Example 2 - Advanced RAPT Response Education in the hands of a slave was dangerous because of the simple fact that they have been deprived of it. Once they obtained it, there would be no stopping them, making them “unmanageable.” Therefore, white men were fearful that one day they would become inferior, so they kept slaves ignorant. As Douglass noted about white men’s fear, if they gave “an inch [a slave would take]…a mile.”
