2 One way to solve an exponential equation is to use the property that if two powers with the same base are equal, then their exponents must be equal.

5 When it is not convenient to write each side of an exponential equation using the same base, you can solve the equation by taking a logarithm of each side.

10 Newton’s law of cooling states that the temperature T of a cooling substance at time t (in minutes) can be modeled by the equation.

11 Example 4: Using an Exponential Model You are cooking alecha, an Ethiopian stew. When you take it off the stove, its temperature is 212ºF. The room temperature is 70ºF and the cooling rate of the stew is r = 0.046. How long will it take to cool the stew to a serving temperature of 100ºF.

12 You can use Newton’s law of cooling with T = 100, T o = 212, T R = 70 and r = 0.046
